Last Wednesday, May 6, the second day of the “Astronaut for a Day” programme, promoted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU), took place, during which the selected young participants boarded a parabolic microgravity flight departing from the General Air Academy in San Javier.
The “Astronauts for a Day”, 30 young people aged between 16 and 22, had the opportunity to experience brief periods of weightlessness similar to those experienced by professional astronauts. The flights were carried out aboard an Airbus A310 Zero-G aircraft. The day concluded with a diploma ceremony and remarks from the Minister of Science, Diana Morant.
The programme began on May 5 with specialised microgravity training delivered by Pablo Álvarez and Sara García, Spanish astronauts from the European Space Agency (ESA).
The initiative has been developed by the Spanish Space Agency, in collaboration with the Spanish Air and Space Force, with the aim of promoting scientific and technological knowledge among high school and university students enrolled in STEM degree programmes.
In addition to these experiences, the selected participants will serve for one year as “Spanish Space Agency Space Ambassadors.”
