The European Space Agency (ESA) has held in Seville the Third ESA Earth Observation Commercialisation Forum (ESA CommEO), which brought together the global Earth observation ecosystem over three days of high-level knowledge, innovation, and networking, from May 12 to 14, 2026.
According to the event organisers in statements to Europa Press, the forum featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, exhibition spaces, and dedicated networking opportunities designed to foster new partnerships and drive commercial growth within the Earth observation sector, with the aim of achieving social benefits and long-term sustainability.
As context, commercial Earth observation enables monitoring, forecasting, and data-driven decision-making for climate, the environment, and resilience. As noted by Sharon Gallo, communication and events coordinator in ESA’s O-Lab division, the forum serves as a “major meeting point,” facilitating dialogue across the entire value chain—from companies and users to institutions—“with a focus on funding and technology,” and supporting the transition from innovation to market impact.
Among the speakers were ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher; Director of Earth Observation Programmes Simonetta Cheli; as well as representatives from the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB), and space agencies from Luxembourg, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Executives from Spanish companies such as Indra Space also took part, including its Earth observation missions director, Demetrio Zorita, and Guardia Civil commander Antonio Gómez.
This year’s CommEO edition focused on the latest emerging trends in the commercial Earth observation (EO) market. According to Gallo, discussions centred on the current stage of the sector, which is entering a new phase of maturity driven by rapid private investment growth, the emergence of market-ready services, and the “increasing strategic relevance” of this field across civil, security, resilience, and defence sectors.
In addition, a dedicated exhibition area, open throughout the event, provided a unique platform for organisations to showcase innovative Earth observation solutions, products, and services to an international audience of industry leaders, investors, and decision-makers.
