The Director of the Spanish Space Agency (AEE), headquartered in Seville, who was recently elected President of the European Space Agency (ESA) Council, asserts that the Andalusian capital “has excellent members to be leaders in this sector of space activity.”
This was stated by the aeronautical engineer from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), appointed Director of the AEE in May 2024, during an interview with Cadena SER, where he emphasized that presiding over the ESA Council “strengthens our country’s role in decision-making in the European space sector.” The Council is composed of heads of agencies from the 23 member states.
“Spain has received significant recognition, which will translate into greater influence over everything related to the European and global space ecosystem.” Regarding the Andalusian aerospace sector, “it is very strong, and this situation will bring clear benefits.”
Concerning the work carried out by the Spanish Space Agency, headquartered in the CREA building in the San Jerónimo district, Cortés highlighted three “very important” projects in the applications field: one focused on remote sensing, with plans to “launch a constellation of Earth observation satellites”; another program related to satellite navigation; and a third branch focused on secure telecommunications. In his view, “the opportunities for Andalusian companies in all these areas will be enormous.”

Additionally, the AEE Director emphasized the Arrakis mission, led by Spain and “aimed at studying dark matter,” as well as the importance of launch vehicles, noting that “you can make satellites, but you need the means to put them into orbit. In this regard, we have long supported the company PLD, which is developing the Miura 5 launcher, scheduled to reach orbit this year.”
