Today, the Museo Casa de la Ciencia Sevilla CSIC was the setting for an inspiring talk by leading molecular biologist and researcher at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), Sara García Alonso.
The event, organised by #AstroEmociones, Colegio Público San Ignacio del Viar, the Seville Amateur Radio Union (URS) and the Seville City Council, was attended by Álvaro Pimentel Siles, Deputy Mayor Delegate of the Cartuja, Innovative Parks, Mobility, Economy and Commerce Area and Margarita Paneque Sosa, Delegate of the CSIC in Andalusia and Director of the Seville Science House Museum, who welcomed Sara García Alonso to the city. Also in attendance were members of the Foto del Espacio and a large group of young people who had the opportunity to interact in person with Sara.
During the presentation of the event, Álvaro Pimentel pointed out that ‘For Seville City Council it is a real privilege to be able to participate in the organisation of this event, especially in this year, where the capital of Seville once again holds the Presidency of Seville of Ariane 2024 Cities’, and stressed that Sara ‘is an example for future generations, who we hope will benefit greatly from your words today’.
Margarita Paneque Sosa said: ‘Today we are at a historic moment, receiving a person, Sara García Alonso, who will undoubtedly contribute to other new scientific milestones that are waiting to be discovered in the Universe’. ‘It is a pleasure for me to welcome you to this space for scientific dissemination. A space promoted by the CSIC, an institution to which we belong, which addresses all areas of knowledge and is key to aerospace research in Spain,’ he added.
During the event, Sara García Alonso was appointed as ambassador of Seville’s Presidency of the Community of Ariane Cities (CVA), after which she was presented with a miniature replica of the Ariane 6, the rocket that made its maiden flight on 9 July from the European Spaceport in French Guiana. A milestone that marked a historic moment and the beginning of a new era for European space travel.
An inspiration for young people
During her speech, Sara shared her work experience in the field of biomedical research, where since 2019 she has been leading a project focused on the discovery of new drugs for the treatment of lung and pancreatic cancer. In addition, she spoke about her personal experience with the space sector, as in a few days she will begin her initial training as a reserve astronaut at the European Space Agency (ESA) European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, a milestone that reinforces her career as a reference in science and space exploration.
During her talk, Sara emphasised the importance of providing children with examples of scientific professionals close to them. She stressed that it is essential to explain to them what these professions can be used for and reaffirmed her conviction that science can indeed be learned.
Sara García Alonso’s visit to the Casa de la Ciencia Museum has been a resounding success, leaving an inspiring impression on the audience and promoting a passion for science among the young people of Seville.
