On 3 September, the final launch of the Vega rocket bearing our city’s name took place, putting into service the Sentinel-2C satellite, which will be an essential Earth observation tool for the European Union.
Seville City Council was present at the launch of the Vega VV24 rocket, which lifted off at 01:50 GMT on 5 September (4 September local time) from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, to place the European Sentinel-2C Earth observation satellite in a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of around 780 kilometres.
The Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, stated that “we are very pleased that in the year of Seville’s presidency of the Ariane Cities Community, both the maiden flight of Ariane 6 and the launch of this Vega satellite have taken place, which will bring into service the European Commission’s third Copernicus satellite, Sentinel-2, and provide us with the data needed to protect Europe’s environment and security”.
