The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Airbus have launched a financing program worth up to €3 billion to support research and the development of new technologies for commercial aviation, defense and space. It is the largest corporate loan ever approved by the European financial institution and is intended to strengthen Europe’s industrial and technological competitiveness.
The agreement has been formalized with the signing of an initial €1 billion loan, which will finance part of Airbus’s planned investments through 2030 in advanced technologies and integrated systems for the commercial aviation, security and defense sectors. The funded projects will be carried out in France, Germany and Spain, helping to strengthen Europe’s aerospace and defense ecosystem.
During the signing ceremony in Brussels, EIB President Nadia Calviño said that the transaction reflects Europe’s determination to strengthen its technological autonomy and industrial capabilities. “This is a landmark transaction,” she said, emphasizing that the loan was approved approximately six months after the application was submitted. According to Calviño, this demonstrates Europe’s ability to act “quickly and at scale” in support of its strategic companies and its position within the current geopolitical landscape.
According to the EIB, the size of the financing package reflects the scale of the investments Airbus must undertake to remain competitive in the global market. In addition, the loan’s extended repayment periods will provide stable, long-term financing for programs considered strategically important to Europe’s industrial resilience and technological leadership.
Airbus Chief Financial Officer Thomas Toepfer said that the financing facility strengthens the strategic partnership between the two organizations and will support research activities in both the commercial and defense sectors. He also noted that the financial terms and flexibility of the agreement will help optimize the company’s balance-sheet management and sustain its long-term investments in aerospace innovation.
The official signing ceremony took place in Brussels and was attended by Airbus Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Faury; EIB President Nadia Calviño; and EIB Vice-Presidents Robert de Groot, Ambroise Fayolle and Nicola Beer.
Airbus’s innovation portfolio focuses on developing advanced manufacturing solutions, capabilities for the next generation of aircraft, decarbonization technologies and connected ecosystems across the aerospace, defense and space sectors.
This financing forms part of the European Investment Bank’s TechEU initiative, which was created to accelerate investment in critical technologies and strengthen the European Union’s industrial and technological competitiveness.
