On Wednesday 8 October, the Casa de la Ciencia – CSIC in Seville hosted the official launch of the third edition of New Space & Solutions, the international event entitled “Where we tell you what New Space does for us”, which will return to Seville from 16 to 19 March 2027. The event took place as part of the Space Forum programme, coinciding with World Space Week.

The event brought together representatives from government, industry, academia, research and innovation to present the initial outline of a third edition, which will seek to further expand its international reach whilst, at the same time, strengthening Seville’s role as a hub for the space ecosystem.

María Medina, managing director of Medina Media Events, has been responsible for unveiling the programme for this third edition, which will focus on some of the major issues transforming the sector: the Atlantic Constellation, the leading agencies and space diplomacy; regulation and the National Space Strategy; Artificial Intelligence applied to defence; cybersecurity, emergencies and sustainability, as well as the growing link between space, security and defence. The event also aims to once again feature active astronauts to bring space exploration closer to the public and encourage careers in STEM.

The presentation was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Seville City Council, Álvaro Pimentel; the Director of Communications at the Spanish Space Agency (AEE), Matias Urrea; the Director-General for Strategy, Innovation and Industrial Ecosystems at the Regional Ministry of Universities, Industry, Energy and Innovation of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Nieves Valenzuela; and the Managing Director of Andalucía Aerospace, Juan Román.

Álvaro Pimentel, Deputy Mayor of Seville City Council, has stated that “Seville is already Spain’s space capital”, thanks to the presence of the Spanish Space Agency (AEE), the ESA BIC Andalucía incubator, companies, universities, research centres and specialist professionals. For Pimentel, the next step is to attract economic activity: “We don’t just want to talk about space; we want companies to be here and to attract many more companies; we want to attract investment”, whilst also creating new career opportunities for young people.

The event also featured a round-table discussion entitled “Seville, Capital of Space”, aimed at analysing what is already being done in Andalusia and what steps the ecosystem needs to take to compete as a European space hub.

Silvia de los Santos, a senior consultant in CTA’s Aerospace and Defence Sector, has identified collaboration as one of Seville’s key assets: “This city’s main strength lies in its capacity for collaboration”. In her view, the joint efforts of the public sector, business, universities and the innovation sector have made it possible to “build a stronger ecosystem”, whose next challenge is to drive forward larger-scale projects and enable start-ups and incubated companies to operate internationally.

Also taking part were Manuel Ortigosa, Dean of the Official Association of Telecommunications Engineers of Western Andalusia and Ceuta; Joaquín Rodríguez, CEO of CATEC; and Raúl Giráldez, Vice-Chancellor for Digital Transformation and Quality at Pablo de Olavide University.
