The European Investment Bank announces the Space Loans Facility at the ESA Ministerial Council

The European Investment Bank (EIB) announced on Wednesday at the ESA Ministerial Council the establishment of its first loan package specifically designed for the European space sector under its TechEU initiative.

The EIB’s Space Loans Facility is a financing initiative aimed at supporting the European space ecosystem by addressing a structural gap in access to credit for SMEs and mid-cap companies. It supports the development of Europe’s industrial base, strengthens supply-chain resilience, and enhances strategic autonomy by enabling commercial banks to lend more broadly to companies active across the entire space value chain.

This EIB initiative is jointly supported by ESA and the European Commission, and it is expected to mobilize around €1.4 billion in the coming years. It represents the next phase of industrial scaling and ensures that Europe maintains its competitiveness and sovereignty in space technology.

ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher stated that “this EIB Space Loans Facility marks a decisive milestone for the European space industry. This new instrument will facilitate greater industrialisation and represents a significant step towards strengthening Europe’s technological sovereignty in space.”
