In this workshop organized by the Spanish Space Agency, the proposal for the new GaiaNIR space mission will be presented. GaiaNIR is a candidate for ESA’s Voyage 2050 programme and is focused on near-infrared astrometry. Throughout the session, its main scientific objectives will be discussed, including the exploration of regions of the galaxy obscured by dust, improving the accuracy of parallaxes and proper motions, and expanding the scientific cases of the Gaia mission.
The meeting will address the following topics:
-
Mission overview: featuring a review lecture by Dr. David Hobbs (Lund Observatory).
-
Technical challenges of the mission.
-
Scientific challenges of near-infrared astrometry and major open scientific questions.
-
Round table with the Spanish space industry.
-
Simulation requests.
-
Synergies with other missions.
-
Round table on actions for future Spanish-led proposals.
