Did you know…?
The basis for the design of the solar panels we use today…
was the response in 1954 to the need for an efficient and lightweight energy source for space missions
The distance between the Earth and the Sun is…
approximately 149 million kilometres on average, although it varies between 147 and 152 million kilometres because the Earth's orbit is elliptical
The first artificial satellite launched into space was…
Sputnik 1, launched by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957, marking the beginning of the space race in the midst of the Cold War with the United States
The surface temperature of the Sun is…
around 6,000˚C, although it is estimated that the core reaches 16 million degrees Celsius.
The lenses used in scratch-resistant sunglasses…
are coated with a diamond-like carbon film that protected astronauts' visors from space dust
The driving force behind the design of the first space suit was…
Emilio Herrera, a military and aerospace engineer from Granada who, in 1935, created the ‘stratonautical diving suit’, a pressurised suit to be used in stratospheric flights
To be considered a planet, a celestial body must…
orbit around a star, be nearly spherical, and not share its orbit with other objects. Pluto lost its status as a planet in 2006 for failing to meet this last requirement
The distance of one light year in kilometres is approximately…
9.46 trillion kilometres! It is the length travelled by light in 365 days and is used to measure the distances between most celestial bodies
Computed axial tomography or CAT…
uses digital image processing technology that originated in NASA's Apollo programme to study samples collected on the Moon
The cameras on most mobile devices…
are based on the CMOS sensor developed by NASA in the late 1980s to take photos of Earth from space while consuming very little energy

Second Deputy Mayor and City Council of Seville Delegate for Cartuja, Innovative Parks, Mobility, Economy and Trade
30 October 2025
About us
The Space Forum, promoted by Seville City Council, is a supra-local entity committed to promoting the aerospace industry through various initiatives aimed at raising awareness of, and educating people about, the sector.
It has established itself as a space for dialogue and shared strategy between public administrations, research centres, universities, major companies in the sector, and start-ups. Its goal is to place Seville at the forefront of the space economy, as well as scientific and technological innovation.
The Forum currently comprises over 50 entities from the sector, including universities, large companies, business associations, sector-specific companies, foundations, and aerospace organisations. They are all responsible for carrying out the activities of European Space Week, held in the first week of October.

SEVILLE Spanish Space Capital
Seville is consolidating its position as one of the world’s leading aerospace hubs by integrating the space sector as a key driver of its economy. Against this backdrop, Seville City Council is championing the ‘Seville Spanish Space Capital’ initiative, with the goal of solidifying the city’s standing as a leader in space sector research, development, and innovation. This initiative is coordinated through the Seville Space Forum, a platform that brings together over 50 sector entities, and is reinforced by Seville’s membership of the Ariane Cities Community (ACC), a network integrating the leading European cities in the space sector.
